چکیده

Environmental legislation requires that power plants monitor the composition of their ash as well as the impact of the emissions or possible re-usage of the ash on the environment. However, this elemental data has not been commonly used for evaluating workers’ exposure, which was our aim in this study. The results of this study showed equally high elemental median amounts, and estimated exposure between bottom and fly ashes in pellet-, woodand peat-fired power plants, and clearly higher median amounts, and higher estimated exposure in an SRF power plant. The results of combined element ash data, and measured inhalable dust air concentrations showed good correlations and p-values (p <0.0001) of Mn, Th, Al, and Cd. According to these results, it seems to be important to use environmental elemental ash data in worker exposure assessments in biomass-fired power plants.

Quantification of radionuclides and associated radiological risk estimation of coal combustion residues from a South African coal-fired power plant

Background: Radionuclides occur in coal combustion residues, such as fly ash and bottom ash, which are by-products of coal combustion. They pose potential radiological risks to people present in the surrounding areas. Materials and Methods: Gamma spectrometry was performed to determine the radionuclide activity concentrations in a coal-driven power plant located in the Limpopo province, South A...

Investigation and Analysis of Air Pollution Emitted from Thermal Power Plants: a Critical Review

A critical review of air pollution emitted from thermal power plants has been carried out by considering several literatures. It is concluded that the disposal of fly ash generated in thermal power plants poses a problem, as it required a large amount of land for dumping, however if utilized properly, this may turn into a resource material for number of sectors for Indian economy. Also it is fo...

Environmental Assessment of Bottom Ash from Canadian Coal-Fired Power Plants

Bottom ashes collected from ESP and baghouse of seven pulverized coal-fired power plants using subbituminous and bituminous coal and a fluidized bed combustor using crushed bituminous coal were examined for their mineralogy and elemental composition. The results presented in this paper are based on the average of three samples collected from each power plant. The mineralogy of each sample was d...

Physical and biological studies of coal and oil fly ash.

Studies were performed to compare the physical and chemical characteristics and the in vitro macrophage cytotoxicity of oil and coal fly ash. Sampling methodology was developed to collect size-fractionated particulate matter from the smokestack of either a coal-fired or an oil-fired power plant. Morphological studies demonstrated particle heterogeneity, although most coal fly ash particles appe...

Morphology and Composition of Microspheres in Fly Ash from the Luohuang Power Plant, Chongqing, Southwestern China

In order to effectively raise both utilization rate and additional value of fly ash, X-Ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-Ray spectrometer (EDS) were used to investigate the morphology, and chemical and mineral composition of the microspheres in fly ash from the Luohuang coal-fired power plant, Chongqing, southwestern China. The majority of fly ash...
